What are Acrylic Dentures?

Spread the love

Acrylic dentures, also referred to as acrylic resin dentures or simply acrylic dentures, are a type of removable denture that is used to replace missing teeth. They are a common and cost-effective option for people who have lost some or all of their natural teeth. Acrylic dentures  are made from a combination of acrylic resin and other materials, like metal or porcelain, for added strength and durability.

Facts about acrylic dentures

Here are some key facts about acrylic dentures :

Types of acrylic dentures

Acrylic dentures come in different types based on the extent of tooth loss and the specific needs of the individual. The two main types of acrylic dentures are:

  • Full dentures: Full dentures are used when all the teeth in one (either upper or lower) arch are missing. They consist of a complete set of artificial teeth attached to an acrylic base that matches the color of the gums. The base of the dentures covers the entire palate or the entire lower gum area. They are held in place by suction and the natural contours of the mouth.
  • Partial dentures: Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain in the mouth. They are designed to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth and prevent the remaining natural teeth from shifting. Partial dentures have a metal or acrylic framework that supports the artificial teeth and clasps onto adjacent natural teeth for stability.

Advantages and disadvantages of acrylic dentures

Advantages of acrylic dentures

Here are some advantages to acrylic dentures:

  • Affordability: Acrylic dentures are generally more budget-friendly compared to other dental prosthetics like dental implants or metal-based dentures, making them a cost-effective option for tooth replacement.
  • Ease of Adjustment: Acrylic dentures can be easily adjusted and relined if necessary to improve fit and comfort. Denture adjustments are common, especially as the mouth’s structure changes over time.
  • Natural Appearance: Modern acrylic dentures are designed to closely resemble natural teeth and gums, providing an aesthetically pleasing smile for the wearer.
  • Non-Invasive: They are a non-invasive tooth replacement option, as they do not require surgery or invasive procedures like dental implants.
  • Quick Fabrication: Acrylic dentures can be fabricated relatively quickly compared to some other dental prosthetics, allowing patients to receive their dentures in a shorter period of time.
  • Removability: Being removable, acrylic dentures are easy to clean and maintain. This feature promotes better oral hygiene and reduces the risk of gum disease and other oral health issues.

Disadvantages of acrylic dentures

Here are some disadvantages of acrylic dentures:

  • Durability: They may not be as durable as other materials like metal-based dentures or dental implants. They are more prone to wear and may require replacement or repair over time.
  • Bulkiness: The acrylic material used in dentures can make them thicker and bulkier compared to other dental prosthetics. Some wearers may find it takes time to get used to the feeling of wearing dentures.
  • Risk of Fracture: They can be susceptible to fractures or cracks if dropped or mishandled, which may necessitate repair or replacement.
  • Bone Resorption: Wearing dentures, including acrylic dentures, does not prevent bone resorption (loss of jawbone density) that occurs when natural teeth are missing. This can lead to changes in the shape of the jawbone over time, affecting the denture fit.
  • Potential for Gum Irritation: Some individuals may experience gum irritation or sore spots initially as they get accustomed to wearing dentures. Proper adjustments by a dentist can address these issues.
